How to Get Work Done in the Summer & Not Feel Like You’re Missing Out

With Summer Fridays, the Hamptons, sunshine, and rooftop Happy Hours, it feels virtually impossible to get work done in the summer and not feel like you’re missing out. The work days go by slower and the weekends fly by. Then you find yourself making all kinds of excuses to get outside and wishing you went to school to be a teacher – summers off? Yes, please!

Luckily 24 Seven has found a way to not only make work possible, but even enjoyable in the summer months. You may even find yourself accomplishing more than you would in the winter months when you’re not tempted with warm weather. So, there is still hope to enjoy your summer and I’m going to tell you how.

Time block

The most effective way to get more done in less time is to time block. This is a technique that many start-up companies and entrepreneurs use to maintain self-discipline and a strong work ethic.

When you first get in the office in the morning, it’s important to block out 3-4 hours of your time and get done your most challenging work first. Around lunchtime is when you can check emails and play catch up, but the need-to-do list is top priority first thing.

But what if you’re not the best with time management? Amazon created an actual “Miracle Cube” that is essentially a timer, which helps with productivity. Relying on an outside source to track your time holds you accountable for your productivity and allows your adrenaline to kick in as you complete a task in an allotted time.

Keep in mind as you time block you may want to give your boss a heads up and set an automated email response so coworkers don’t think you’re ignoring them. Closing your office door or putting in your headphones is also a good indication that you’re “in the zone” and not to be disturbed.

Take a break… or 3

Most jobs allow a 30-minute to a one-hour lunch break yet workers neglect to utilize it. Why? Perhaps lunch hours are not used due to employees feeling guilty, having a heavy workload, or because no one else is doing it.

If you can afford a few minutes on Facebook and Instagram throughout the day, you can afford to go outside and enjoy the summer for your lunch break. If it’s a really nice day, split that hour into two 30-minute breaks or three 20-minute breaks.

Not only will you not feel like you’re missing out but when you come back to the office you’ll feel refreshed and ready to time block any new tasks.

Relocate your office outside

With new work studies emerging about standing desks, remote work, and flexible schedules, unconventional is now accepted as “the norm”. If you happen to work in this type of environment, you may be able to get away with taking your laptop outside to a cafe or park for an afternoon and continuing to be productive from there. That way you’re able to take advantage of the sunshine and summertime and you don’t feel like you’re missing out.

Even teachers are beginning to implement this technique in the spring and fall by taking students outside to conduct their lessons. A change of scenery and pace is often a good thing for people as it keeps us on our toes.

Take advantage of time off

In the summertime, you want to be able to get out of work and still have time to enjoy the weather. Some companies in the city have adopted “Summer Fridays” which is when they close the office early so people can beat the traffic and go away for the weekend or just to enjoy some extra fun in the sun time. If this is the case for you, make sure you’re all caught up at work so you’re not plagued with the stresses of work over the weekend.

Even if you don’t work for a company that offers Summer Fridays, you may still get extra time off in the summer for Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day. It might even be a good idea to get started on future projects or to finish projects ahead of their deadlines. Have all your ducks in a row prior to leaving and turn off notifications from work so you can take full advantage of your time off and not feel like you’re missing out.

The One Word to Avoid at Work

I recently read an article by Cosmopolitan about what not to say at work. (Naturally I had to click it since I’m still a newbie at 24 Seven and want to give my very best impression.) The one word that stuck out to me was one I had heard countless times before. A word that had rubbed me the wrong way but I couldn’t figure out why until now.

‘Just’

… is a common word used in the office to ask for something, tell a justification, or used to avoid offending anyone. However, you may be subconsciously doing more harm than good by keeping ‘just’ in your vocabulary.

Phrases like “I just think…”, “Can you just…”, “Just give me…” have an unnecessary apologetic undertone. There is no need to detract from your statement in a meeting or otherwise by adding the word ‘just’. You are entitled to say what you think and how you feel without the guilt of doing so.

You can omit ‘just’ completely or try swapping it out for words like ‘please’ and ‘only’. These substitutes will alleviate the need to explain your statements. It’s time we start speaking with power and influence instead of regret and guilt.

Communication is key in any aspect of your career. It is used to resolve conflict, express ideas, and maintain professional relationships. How you speak to others will teach them how to speak to you, so you want to make sure you’re addressing them in a manner that is respectful to you and them.

You want to be confident yet approachable and straightforward yet compassionate. All of these qualities are attained through communication. What you say matters.

Think before you speak

Communication is key to all relationships, professional and otherwise. How you communicate and the language you use is a direct representation of the person you are. If you use a lot of ‘buts’ when you speak people may think you’re being defensive. If you use a lot of ‘likes’ you may be perceived as naive and juvenile. It’s interesting to see how these little words affect how we’re treated and recognized by our coworkers.

Start communicating authentically and unapologetically and you just may inspire coworkers around you to do the same.

Why Your Recruiter Isn’t Getting You a Job

Since working at a recruitment agency I have been fortunate enough to see the ins and outs of the process, and what really goes on behind closed doors. Before I landed my job at 24 Seven I used several other recruitment agencies that weren’t nearly as efficient or understanding.

Usually, when someone does turn to a recruiter it’s out of desperation. Throw that in the mix with hundreds of thousands of candidates fighting for the same job and you have yourself a very frustrating situation. It’s even more frustrating when you don’t know why your recruiter isn’t getting you a job. After asking our top recruiters for advice, we’ve identified 3 scenarios why this might happen:

Timing

At the time you approached your recruiter there may not have been any available jobs that were a good fit for you. While one would think that all it takes is a friendly personality and great experience to land the job of your dreams, it’s actually a bit more complex. You have to fit culturally within the company of the position you’re applying for.

Recruiters will ask you a series of questions in your initial interview that will help them feel out whether or not you’re a fit in every way for a certain role. For example, one might have the experience the employer is looking for, but lack the self-discipline to work in an autonomous, start-up environment. It’s a recruiter’s #1 priority to match candidates and employers in a way that will ensure success for both parties.

“Timing is everything”, according to Freelance Account Manager, Mabel Liang. So have patience because your dream job is likely right around the corner.

Your credentials don’t match up

According to our VP of Recruitment, Saloni Ahuja Shah, when the credentials are there but “you do not come across knowledgeable about your profession” recruiters see a red flag. Saloni says another turnoff is when “you come across entitled about your experience and salary”. In other words, let the recruiters work their magic and their knowledge of the job market to help you get a job.

Trust that your recruiter knows more about the company looking for talent than you do and he/she is fully capable of recognizing whether your credentials/skills would be a good match or not.

The position was filled

The job market, especially in New York, is so fast-paced that doors can open and close with the drop of a hat. Because of this, sometimes a position fills before you have even managed to apply for it, in which case your recruiter isn’t getting you that job.

Instead of taking it personally, be proactive and reach out to your recruiter to see what other opportunities may be coming up. If you want a job, you have to go after it (but please don’t cyber stalk your recruiter).

A recruiter is not going to hunt you down every time a new job pops up. It’s always good to check in with your recruiter once in a while so you’re fresh in his/her mind as a possible candidate.

 

Remember when all else fails don’t harp on what isn’t working, but change your tactic instead if you’re not receiving the response you hoped for.

Career Over Coffee: The Everygirl Writer Jess Keys

Since freelancing is on the brain of just about every Millennial, I decided to catch up with fellow blogger, Jess Keys who is also a freelance contributor for The Everygirl.The Everygirl’s success has sky-rocketed since it was announced on Forbes Top 100 Websites for Women. And in turn, Jess’s success has exploded along with it, as she now writes for Time Out Chicago and runs her own blog The Golden Girl.

Q: Briefly describe your background.

I worked in advertising right out of college for four years, for two separate agencies, but I felt like I wasn’t getting to be as creative in my job as I had hoped, so I started my blog, The Golden Girl, simply as an outlet for writing, photography, and creative expression. That segued into leaving my agency job to be a brand manager for an entrepreneur, which gave me some really great experience and was a good midway point between a 9-5 and a real freelance lifestyle. (AKA I had to learn how to budget for taxes, track my hours, and pay for my own health insurance, but knew that I would get a paycheck every month.) The job didn’t end up being what I had envisioned and turned out to be a pretty toxic environment, so I took the leap out on my own and figured I would just see what happened.

Q: What is the fuss about freelancing and why should new job seekers take it into consideration?

Freelancing is great because you get the unique ability to make your own schedule. If you’re someone who hates structure and craves flexibility, it’s a really good option. Freelance work can also compliment a 9-5 job if you’re looking to experiment with new things, get your feet wet in a certain industry, or just looking to make some money on the side.

Q: How did you start your freelancing career?

Per the above, I eased into it slowly, and then was forced to take a leap of faith. If I was going to sink or swim, I’d like to know sooner rather than later. (Luckily, I haven’t sunk yet!) I realized I’d rather be a freelancer and babysit or wait tables on the side to maintain that lifestyle if I had to. (Again, I haven’t, so I’d say it all worked out!) Corporate structure really was not for me!

Q: What advice do you have for someone looking to transition to freelancing?

Really assess if it’s going to be the right choice for you because it’s certainly not for everyone. I’d recommend starting on the side first – I did my blog and wrote freelance for over a year before I even considered it as a full-time option. Going through a recruiter is a good way to get your feet wet, 24 Seven offers a ton of freelancing opportunities.

Understand what you are comfortable with. Along with freelancing comes a lot of uncertainty. If you’re one of those people who gets nervous without structure or has to have the next 10 steps ahead of them planned, freelancing probably isn’t for you. But if you want a lifestyle that you control, freedom to choose your clients, work, schedule, and so on – there is truly nothing more liberating.

Q: How has networking helped build your career?

Networking is really key to building any career. I think so many people go about it the wrong way, though – I actually wrote an article about this recently, called “Stop Asking People to Coffee“. Essentially, asking people to coffee doesn’t work anymore. You have to put yourself in the other person’s shoes if you want networking to work for you, and who has time to get coffee with a random stranger?

Q: Do you have a business/career mentor and how has he/she helped you on your career path?

I’d say my fellow blogger friends are my biggest mentors. No matter what you do for a living I’d highly recommend building a friend group of people who do the same thing as you. Designers, photographers, whatever – you can learn so much from your peers, and you will always balance each other out. Chances are, what you struggle with is someone else’s strong suit, and you can grow much more quickly if you help one another out along the way.
